High School Team Event Meridian, Idaho 2019

April 27, 2019 Renaissance High School, Meridian, Idaho. Caleb Tolman of Eagle High organized the three round event featuring four five-player teams. Gem State Chess with five USCF members took first place honors scoring 3-0 in the team competition and 12-3 in the individual board matchups. There was a four way tie at 2-0 for First in the eight player Reserve section. The Reserve was won by Michael Underwood on tie breaks. Also scoring 2-0 were: Ava Gaylord, Lincoln Todd and Andrew Wong.

28 players participated in the event which included Gem State Chess and teams from Eagle, Mountain View and Renaissance High Schools.

Between round festivities included simuls and opening system instruction.

A special thanks to Julie Nahlen of the Master’s Academy for providing sets and boards. The Chandra Alexis Chess Club which provided tournament director support and security from Vinny! our club enforcer and velociraptor. Renaissance High for providing facilities and faculty coverage. Equally important are the parents and friends who made this event possible … the cake and lemonade were fantastic, complements to the chef!
